Valréas is the capital of the Enclave des Papes, a group of 4 villages in the Vaucluse (including Visan, Valréas, Grillon and Richerenches) enclosed in the Drôme. Located on the wine route, the flowered town of Valréas is surrounded by colourful landscapes, alternating fields of fragrant lavender, forests of truffle oaks, brooms, vines and wild garrigues. Also, the place lends itself perfectly to hiking, thanks to many trails arranged like the GR 9, which you can walk or cycle to contemplate some of the most beautiful panoramas that Valréas has to offer on its valleys. If there is a pastoral itinerary, it is the famous circuit of the Papal Monuments: along nearly 12 kilometres, this pedestrian and cycling itinerary from the heart of the city will lead you to the discovery of these monuments which once delimited the pontifical residences. In addition to its fun aspect, this hike is particularly appreciated for its breathtaking views of the Lance mountain, the Dentelles de Montmirail and Mont Ventoux in particular. It should also be noted that Valréas is watered by many rivers, such as the Coronne River, which is a wonderful walking area with its cool stream. Mountain bikers will be able to enjoy nearly 130 kilometres of marked trails through the Grignan Country and the Enclave des Papes.

With a historical heritage of more than 1000 years of history, this ancient city of the Pontifical States has preserved many witnesses to its past, particularly thanks to its important architectural heritage. A keep of Château Ripert, Tour Ripert dominates Valréas from its 17 metres high. With its 2-metre thick walls, this 12th century square tower is one of the town's landmarks, also known as the "Clock Tower". During your walks, you will notice that the city is dotted with many chapels as well as many private mansions from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, such as the Hôtel d'Inguimbert. The Chapel of the White Penitents is certainly the most famous: built in the 16th century, it is worth a visit, especially for its magnificent trompe-l'oeil ceiling made of superb rosettes. Continue your visit of the heart of the city by passing by the Grand' rue, the rue de l'Hôtel de Ville and the rue de l'Horloge, in front of the Mur des Fusillés, the Café de la Paix, the former convent of the Cordeliers, the chapel of the Pénitents Noirs and the church Notre-Dame de Nazareth. A few cables away, Simiane Castle is also one of the emblematic buildings of Valréas: it is a Renaissance-style building located in the heart of downtown Valréas and nowadays houses the town hall of the village. Known as the birthplace of Pauline de Grignan, Madame de Sévigné's granddaughter, this castle can be visited, particularly for its model room, exhibitions, rare book collections and unique panoramas of the town from its keep. We strongly recommend that you visit it, as well as the unmissable Museum of Cardboard and Printing, which traces the history and creation of the famous cardboard box that was created in Valréas, the cardboard capital since the 19th century.

Popular with gourmands and epicureans for its flavours, Valréas is finally rich in many culinary treasures that will delight young and old alike. Let yourself be tempted by a piece of Picodon (a soft goat cheese) accompanied by wines from local cooperatives, or by the slaves of the Enclave, cold-pressed olive oil and delicious truffles, a must of local cuisine. The neighbouring municipality of Richerenches will amaze you with its legendary truffle market, which is held every Saturday morning from December to March.
