Explore Barbâtre
L'Ile de Noirmoutier, a small jewel located off the coast of the Vendée which seduces every year many holidaymakers in search of tranquility and beauty. It is from the south of the island, via the town of Barbâtre, that Noirmoutier can be reached via the mainland. In the past, the Gois passage, almost 5 kilometres long, which was only revealed at low tide, was the only access point to the island. In 1971, a bridge was built to facilitate the passage between the island territory and the Vendée.
Until the 19th century, Noirmoutier was composed of only one commune. But seaside tourism began to make its appearance, and Barbâtre became in 1858 an independent commune facing the growth of the population. Today, this charming little town of 1800 inhabitants stretches over 7 kilometres. It is famous for its magnificent mills, all three listed historic monuments.
Barbâtre is also a splendid beach of fine sand, called Plage de l'Océan, where holidaymakers enjoy a mild climate and almost constant sunshine in season. Swimming and tanning sessions are obviously on the programme, but let's not forget that the Atlantic Ocean is synonymous with water sports ! The Sel Ton Char sailing school welcomes you on the beach at low tide to discover this little known and yet very accessible discipline. Unlike other beach sports, it is not played on water but on sand. The sand yacht is a small three-wheeled vehicle with a sail on top and propelled by the wind. At Sel Ton Char, from the age of 8, you can learn how to drive this unique machine with the help of a passionate instructor. On the waves of Barbâtre, also come to discover a sport a little more complex but just as amusing : kitesurfing ! This cousin of surfing consists in evolving on a board pulled by a kite, thus making it possible to take speed with the wind. At Mouvnkite, Julien takes care of you ! This qualified instructor teaches this discipline since 2008. Learning is done in groups of four maximum, at your pace and according to your abilities. And from the first hour of class, you'll already be in the water.
During the summer months, art and culture are in the spotlight in Barbâtre ! Since 1993, the commune has been part of a cultural programme linking a dozen Atlantic coastal towns called La Déferlante. A multitude of free shows are organized for the pleasure of holidaymakers and locals. Theatre, dance, circus arts, music from here and elsewhere, street arts... Something to please everyone !
