La Roche-sur-Yon is located between Nantes and La Rochelle. Halfway between the Puy-du-Fou and the sea, in the heart of the Vendée, La Roche-sur-Yon is an astonishing destination, which will amaze history buffs as well as nature lovers.

Built in 1804 by none other than Napoleon Bonaparte, La Roche-sur-Yon is located in the Yon valley, a nature paradise in the heart of the Vendée. Here, what surprises the visitor is the extent to which the city brilliantly blends history and modernity, nature and culture. The seat of an ancient principality in the Middle Ages, La Roche-sur-Yon initially developed around its castle and the Vieille Horloge district. A key witness of this period, the Renaissance House dating from 1566 is worth a visit for its museum which traces the history of the town. Then, under the influence of Napoleon, La Roche-sur-Yon took on a completely different face, its checkerboard layout and its remarkable pentagonal shape saw the birth of splendid neo-classical style buildings which still make the reputation of the city today. Take the time to walk around the emblematic Place Napoléon (called Place Nap' by the locals): flanked by four ponds, this huge square is a sort of giant terrace with deckchairs and green spaces where you can have a picnic under the sun by the water. Young and old alike will not be able to miss its famous "mechanical bestiary": crocodiles, hippopotamuses, dromedaries and other animals in mechanical sculptures, which you can bring to life by operating them with levers. Discover the old court, the imperial high school of 1815, the Saint-Louis church, the ruins of the fortified castle, the post office, and don't miss a stop on the Place du Théâtre. In the heart of the city centre, you will discover an imposing theatre with the appearance of an ancient temple, which houses a magnificent Italian-style theatre hosting numerous shows throughout the year. Take a walk in the Parc de Rivoli, go to the Moulin Papon lake for a mountain bike or sailing trip, marvel at the Chaos de Piquet, visit the Haras de la Vendée to see a horse show, and enjoy the Musée du Chocolat! A tip? Don't miss Rue du Roc: overlooking the Yon valley on the ledge facing the castle, this pretty historic district is home to the Maison du Sénéchal and its terraced gardens, as well as the Logis du Roc.

La Roche-sur-Yon is a dynamic town with more than 500 shops, perfect for a shopping break! Stroll along the semi-pedestrianised rue Clémenceau and the Halles district, which is overflowing with shops where you can do your shopping. The largest fresh produce market in the Vendée, the Halles market is a must for finding seasonal fruit and vegetables! As for food, the town is full of restaurants where you can sit down and taste some of the best specialities of La Roche-sur-Yon: chouée, bottereau, Vendée ham, guinea fowl with cabbage, potée, potironnée, mogette vendéenne, gâche, brioche, fish and other sweet and savoury delights will delight the taste buds of young and old alike.
