The Eixample, which in Catalan means "extension", is the largest extension made in Barcelona : it separates the old city and the district of Gracia. The Passeig de Gracia delimits the Eixample Dreta ("right") and the Eixample Esquerra ("left"). As one of the newest districts of Barcelona, it is part of the urbanization plan introduced by the architect Ildefons Cerdà in 1850 which resulted in a major overhaul of the Catania capital. This artist had an obsession for straight lines, which probably explains why the district is composed like a grid, each building being provided with an inner courtyard and placed along the east-west axis to capture every ray of sunshine. It is in this district that Barcelona's wealthiest residents have taken up residence. Opulent residences face each other and the architectural masters of modernism were able to fully express their art.

Passeig de Gracia is home to many luxury shops and boutiques. It is also home to the city's most expensive hotels, upscale restaurants, bars and nightclubs as well as many surprising buildings that are often architectural feats of the famous Antonio Gaudi. To mention just one : La Pedrera, a sumptuous residence commissioned by the entrepreneur and promoter Pere Milà i Camps, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984, has become a cultural centre exhibiting the works and models of the Catalan artist.

As you continue on the Passeig, you may be intrigued by three atypical constructions... Known as "La Manzana de la Discordia" (literally : "the apple of discord"), this collection of 20th century buildings includes the Casa Lleó Morera by Lluís Domènech i Montaner, the Casa Amatller by Josep Puig i Cadafalch and the Casa Batlló by Antonio Gaudi. The aesthetics are different and the architectures are ostensibly opposed. Indeed, Catalan architects had to compete with their imagination to satisfy their wealthy clients, each of them wishing to exhibit the most beautiful residence !

Along the Passeig de San Juan (parallel to the Passeig de Gracia), you can admire the majestic parish of Sant Francesc de Sales, built by Joan Martorell i Montells, one of Gaudi's masters. Continuing on the Passeig, you will reach the famous Arc de Triomphe of Barcelona, built for the 1888 Universal Exhibition and located in the Ciutadella Park. Your visit to Eixample would certainly be incomplete without a visit to the famous Sagrada Famiglia Basilica ! An emblematic building whose construction began in 1882 under Gaudi's impetus and which should be completed, according to the engineering plans, in 2026 for the centenary of Gaudi's death.
