Fontvieille, made famous by Alphonse Daudet's "Lettres de Mon Moulin", is a place where the gentle way of life blends with the charm of authenticity. Here, one takes the time to breathe, to contemplate, to visit, to store up souvenirs galore and to taste a little bit of the Provencal character that many holidaymakers love.

The small village of Fontvieille lies in the wonderful setting of the Alpilles Regional Natural Park, just between Arles and Les Baux-de-Provence. Gateway to the Vallée des Baux, Fontvieille is one of the pearls of the Alpilles Massif, whose history dates back to prehistoric times. What is surprising when you enter the village after having crossed the Alpilles, dotted with green fields and olive groves, is without a doubt its built heritage. Here, the houses are opulent, sometimes very opulent, made of beautiful light-coloured stones from the quarries that brought life to Fontvieille at the beginning of the 15th century. This so particular stone was even used to build the arenas of Nîmes and Arles, as well as the castle of Tarascon. Here, everything smells like Provence. With family, lovers or friends, you will love to stroll through the elegant streets of Fontvieille, dotted with refreshing fountains (especially on the Place de l'Eglise side) and houses with shutters painted in green, blue, purple or red. On foot or by bike, you will also find itineraries allowing you to discover the wealth of the town's historical heritage, in the direction of the Estoublon castle in the north-east, the Saint-Jean-de-Grès chapel at the foot of the Alpilles, the Abbots' tower (symbol of the town), or the troglodytic dwellings of the Planet. But if there is one site inseparable from the history of the village, it is the Saint-Pierre mill. Also called the "mill of Alphonse Daudet", it stands proudly on a small hill just outside the village. The most famous windmill in the village, and even in France, it is the last to have been in operation in the area and houses in its basement a museum totally dedicated to Alphonse Daudet. Not far away, less than a kilometre away, the castle of Montauban is worth seeing. The holiday resort of Alphonse Daudet in particular, it is located on the "Parcours Daudet", an itinerary that will allow you to discover the life and work of the Provencal writer via a path along the mills of the town. Another must to see while passing through Fontvieille? The Roman Aqueduct of Barbegal and its mills in the south of the town. A vast hydraulic complex, described as "the greatest concentration of mechanical power in the ancient world", this site well known to hikers will take you back in time!

Loaded with history, Fontvieille is also a dynamic town where sportsmen and culture enthusiasts alike can flourish. Also, many events are organized in the town throughout the year. In addition to its gourmet market which is held every Monday and Friday (morning), horse fairs, Fêtes du Moulin, cycle races, olive pruning competitions, Easter celebrations, flower fairs, manades, Midsummer's Day celebrations, Camargue races, village festivals and the Provencal Christmas market punctuate the year. After taking the time to explore Fontvieille and taste the delights of the flavours of Provence, head for neighbouring Arles, Avignon (30 kilometres away), Nîmes, Beaucaire, the Pont du Gard (31 kilometres away), Les Baux-de-Provence, Tarascon, Saint-Étienne-du-Grès, the beaches of the Mediterranean less than an hour away, Maussane-les-Alpilles or Eygalières, to complete your stay and marvel at the surprising richness of Provence's heritage.
