Built on a cliffside between 60 and 218 meters above sea level, overlooking the Dordogne river, La Roque-Gageac is part of the association Les Plus Beaux Villages de France. 12 kilometers from Sarlat-la-Canéda, La Roque-Gageac is the third most beautiful village in France after the Mont-Saint-Michel and Rocamadour. Here, the atmosphere is worthy of the most beautiful postcards: the houses are all topped with brown tile roofs emblematic of the region, the walls are made of warm-toned bricks, reminiscent of the rock of its wide cliff. La Roque-Gageac is a real invitation to stroll and daydream. Take the time to observe the bell tower-wall of the 14th century church, adorned with a Périgord lauze roof, and to enter the exotic garden accessible from the church courtyard: before your eyes, banana trees, bamboos, cacti, fig trees and palms blossom under the generous sun of this Dordogne village. As for visits, the list is quite long and we advise you to discover the ruins of the Castle of the Bishops of Sarlat, the magnificent Manor of Tarde, a vestige of the Renaissance, as well as the Castle of Malartrie, a site overhanging the Dordogne, adjacent to the village of La Roque-Gageac. Along the houses with their white and ochre facades, you will discover a whole string of small streets that will lead you tirelessly to the heights of the cliff from where the panoramas are breathtaking on the river. But if there is one visit not to be missed, it is the Fort of La Roque-Gageac. Accessible via a vertiginous staircase on the side of the cliff, this magnificent 12th century troglodytic fort is THE treasure of the village. You will discover during this visit the vestiges of its ancient defensive system, its ditch, its knocker, its covered way, but also its gun ports and its loopholes. A former medieval fortification, it unveils a fun tour that will allow you to retrace the history of the village, its valley, the Périgord Noir and its greatest characters.

Benefiting from an almost Mediterranean microclimate and a southern exposure, La Roque-Gageac enjoys beautiful sunny days all year long. The river is a privileged way to discover the village: aboard "gabarres", traditional flat-bottomed boats, let yourself be transported along the water to discover the route that these boats used to take to transport goods along the Dordogne. In the area, via the Dordogne, by bike or on foot, you can also discover the Castle of Montfort, the Castle of Milandes, Sarlat-la-Canéda, but also the Forest of the Squirrels, the ponds of Bos, the castles of La Roque, Puymartin, Commarque, the caves of the Roc de Cazelle, of the Grand Roc, the cave of Font-de-Gaume or even the Fortified House of Reignac on the Vézère...
