Also known as "La Cité des Peintres", the town of Pont-Aven, in Finistère, is an ideal destination for holidaymakers in love with typical Breton landscapes. Between Quimperlé and Concarneau, this bucolic and bohemian village will reveal its many charms that once inspired so many artists.

Lovée in the heart of the Aven estuary in an enchanting setting, this city of character owes its notoriety to dozens of artists who have walked its streets, including Paul Gauguin who chose to set up his school of painters there at the very end of the 19th century. If Gauguin and so many other painters immortalized Pont-Aven forever with their brushes, it is thanks to the singular beauty of this commune, thanks to its poetic landscapes and its luminous port. You can easily understand why and how so many artists have been fascinated by Pont-Aven by strolling along its quays, its ria, its mills and its picturesque streets. Crossed by the capricious river Aven frequented by a few boaters and many water sports enthusiasts, Pont-Aven still has 14 water mills in operation today. With its flowered granite houses, 20th century villas, workshops and galleries, stroll along its narrow streets and pretty bridges to discover the mysteries of this picturesque city. From one side of the town to the other, the "Xavier-Grall" walk will take you to discover the wash houses, secret footbridges and flower banks of Pont-Aven. Paradis des articles, the city also houses a museum of Fine Arts, a must for your visit if you are a lover of art and painting. A path called "Sur les Pas de Gauguin" will also allow you, via three circuits arranged, to leave to meet the places cherished by the artist-painter. On foot or by bike, follow the river along the GR 34 to the Hénan site : its arboretum, its three fountains, its chapel and its tidal mill are among the most visited sites in the area. The castle of Hénan is also not to be missed, as are the chapels of Trémor and Sainte-Marguerite. Hidden behind a wide tangle of beech and oak trees above the Bois d'Amour, the chapel of Trémalo and its eccentric roof are worth a visit. Dating from the 16th century, this building with an asymmetrical roof grazing the ground is planted in the middle of a landscape worthy of a painting : the place was very appreciated by painters who gathered there to devote themselves to their art for hours.

For swimming and relaxing, head for the seaside towns of Trégunc, Concarneau and Névez. On several kilometres of purified coasts famous for their beauty, you will find an alternation of long beaches of fine sand, dunes, points and coves paradisiac where to tan in all peace. If in Trégunc the "Beach of the Whale" is among the most beautiful, with your family, we advise you to go to Nevez, famous for its expanses of fine sand where everyone will find room to plant his parasol. Hemmed with white cabins, Port-Manec'h beach is undeniably a family beach : located at the mouth of the Aven and Bélon rivers, 10 kilometres from the centre of Pont-Aven, it is one of the busiest beaches in the city. High place of holiday resort of the Belle Epoque, this beach is bordered of multiple manors today transformed into hotels or restaurants. Thanks to the presence of a nautical centre, it attracts sailing, kayaking and paddle enthusiasts. Along the coast, you can also surf and budding sailors can go on a sea excursion to discover the Cornish Coast.

Finally if there is one thing Brittany can boast of, it is to have a gastronomy rich in comforting flavours. Recognizable by their inimitable taste, Pont-Aven wafers are the jewel of the culinary heritage of the commune. Thus, since 1890, palets and crunchy patties are the delight of the most demanding palates. Even today, two artisanal biscuit factories are in charge of perpetuating this culinary tradition so beloved by Pontavenists and gourmands.
