The 11th arrondissement of Paris is intimately linked to French history. It is indeed in this one that, on July 14, 1789, the Parisians, took by assault one of the symbols of the royal power: the Bastille. This state prison, which had Voltaire and Mirabeau as boarders, was not to survive this offensive : a few months later, it was dismantled stone by stone. Today, only a few remains on the ground indicate its former location and the Place de la Bastille now houses less controversial buildings. To the south of the square, enjoy the immense Bastille Opera House. Inaugurated on July 14, 1989, its architecture is very modern with, notably, its transparent facades. Guided tours allow you to discover its interiors.
The Bastille district also has an old tradition of nightlife. In the 1930s, the rue de Lappe hosted many popular balls. Only one remains : the Balajo, now transformed into a nightclub but which keeps some of its vintage spirit by offering dancing teas on Monday afternoons. Just next door, the rue de la Roquette is just as famous for its nightlife with its latin bars and frenzied dancefloors. When night fell, the other great place of celebration of the district is the rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine. This artery, formerly devoted to furniture crafts, is now full of bars and restaurants open until the early morning.
In the district of the Faubourg Saint-Antoine, a picturesque stroll awaits you through courtyards and passages dating from the 17th century (courtyard of the Trois-Frères, courtyard of the Ours, passage Lhomme, passage de la Main-d'Or...). You will discover cabinet workshops, art galleries, bistros and even a 32 meter high steam engine chimney! If you wish to do a little shopping, you will find many fashion, designer, decoration and furniture stores in the rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine, the rue Keller or the rue de Charonne. To eat, you will have the embarrassment of the choice but some good addresses await you rue Paul-Bert, rue de la Folie-Méricourt or rue de la Pierre-Levée.
