Famous for its chain of dormant volcanoes, the Puy-de-Dôme impresses by the beauty and diversity of its landscapes. A natural destination par excellence, the department is also known for its pretty towns, its heritage and its local products.
Set in an exceptional environment, the towns of Puy-de-Dôme invite you to discover all their riches. At the foot of the volcano that gave its name to the department, the largest of them, Clermont-Ferrand, stands out for the number of its historical monuments. Walking through the historic centre, you will appreciate the small pedestrian streets that lead to the beautiful Gothic cathedral of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption. But also admire the Elephant House, dating from the 12th century, the Romanesque Notre-Dame-du-Port Basilica, the statue of Vercingetorix and the Michelin Adventure exhibition centre, which traces the history of this company that has always been linked to the city.
Then go to Issoire, one of the most beautiful detours in France, where you can admire the largest Romanesque church in Auvergne : the abbey church of Sainte-Austremoine. Also enjoy the Clock Tower, the Philosopher's Stone Museum and the many old houses that line the narrow streets of the old quarter. Continue your city escapades by Riom, the former royal capital of Auvergne, to visit the Saint-Amable basilica, the Sainte-Chapelle, the belfry and the Mandet museum, and by Thiers for its medieval atmosphere, its Romanesque church and its cutlery museum. Between two cities, do not hesitate to move away from the main roads to discover charming villages like Aydat (church, menhir, lake) Murol (castle, megalithic table) or Tauves (church, chapel, menhir).
With its unique landscapes, the Puy-de-Dôme is also a dream place to practice many activities. On foot, discover the lakes, the natural parks and take the Chemin des Muletiers to reach the summit of Puy de Dôme. By bike, enjoy the majestic setting of the volcanoes by following the cycling and tourist itineraries proposed by the department. You can also take advantage of the many nautical bases and rivers for swimming, pedal boat, sailing, canoeing or canyoning. In winter, put on your skis and join the resorts of Super-Besse, Mont-Dore or La Bourboule.
