About ten kilometres from the wonderful beaches of Saint-Jean-de-Luz, Sare is one of the best holiday destinations for family holidays.

Sare is the land of Basque traditions. Here, the massive 17th century houses are adorned with half-timbering and shutters coloured in red or green, immersing visitors in an instant in the atmosphere so characteristic of the region. To capture all the essence of this village, a member of the Most Beautiful Villages in France, there's nothing like a little tour of its historic centre. In the central square, the pelota court takes up almost all the space; it is here that, on sunny days, players and fans of this local sport meet in a friendly atmosphere, characteristic of Basque culture. Along the bridges, wash houses, fountains and oratories, you will discover the small hamlets that surround Sare, thanks to footpaths and cycle paths designed to make it easier for visitors to get around. Pass by the church of Saint-Martin, known for its golden oak galleries, and make a cultural stop at the traditional Basque house of Ortillopirz. Dating back to the 17th century, it will plunge you into the heart of village life of yesteryear, for a perfect immersion in the local traditions.

A land of escape and hiking, Sare, between the sea and the mountains, offers its visitors a setting that could not be more ideal for outdoor activities. On foot, on horseback or on mountain bike, there are many marked trails that will allow you to discover all the faces of the area. From the Lizarrieta pass (441 metres above sea level), known for its fauna and oak forests, to the wonderful site of Lezeko Gaina, not forgetting the Poudingues rocks of Athekaleun, the slopes of the Rhune, the magnificent prehistoric caves of Sare and the GR10 trails, you will be amazed by the variety of panoramas that you can discover during your excursions. The Rhune massif can also be discovered by train with the whole family. Thanks to the famous Rhune train, a colourful rack railway dating from 1924, you will be able to discover magnificent views of the most beautiful summits of the Basque Country, and of the valleys where the "Pottoks", small wild ponies emblematic of the Rhune, graze.

Finally, after visiting the caves of Sare and the Etxola Animal Park, it is impossible not to stop off at the nearby beaches of Saint-Jean-de-Luz. Perfect for eating ice-cream in front of the sunset, the beaches of Saint-Jean-de-Luz are particularly suitable for water sports: in addition to swimming and beach volleyball, you can go surfing, paddling, sailing or kitesurfing, in short, to complete your holiday in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques!
