About thirty minutes from the Spanish border, the village of La Bastide-Clairence is located in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. A small village of less than 1000 inhabitants, called the "Bastidots", La Bastide-Clairence is well known to lovers of authentic scenery, and is classified as one of the "Most Beautiful Villages in France". A renowned Navarrese bastide, located in the beautiful Basque province of Basse-Navarre, it is crossed by numerous rivers that poetically outline its contours, such as the Aran (also called Joyeuse), the Arbéroue and the Jouan de Pès stream. Divided into 6 districts, the village nestles on a hillside on the banks of the Aran and boasts a splendid architectural heritage that you cannot miss during your walks. If there is one must-do to start this visit, it is to go to the side of the Place des Arceaux. With its magnificent half-timbered houses, this dynamic square is one of the most beautiful in all of La Bastide-Clairence. You will see houses built in a pure Labourdin style for the most part, recognizable by their gabled walls, their gabled roofs, their red or green facades with corbels, their splendid mullioned windows and their sculpted lintels. Some of these houses, which house numerous galleries and other craftsmen, were built in a local style, which you can distinguish by their four-sided roofs and arched doors. During your excursions, the old Jewish cemetery, the old game of paume on which is now built a trinquet (the oldest in the world), the church Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption and its amazing wooden galleries, or the chapel Notre-Dame de Clairence will complete the inventory of places not to be missed during this stay.

During the summer, the village will delight you with its numerous festivities: guided tours of the village with local folk songs and dances, but also the nightly farmers' market every Tuesday, the Basque pottery market, and other village festivals will immerse you in the warm and friendly atmosphere of the region. Also, after having taken the time to visit old farms and to sit down in one of the restaurants of the city to succumb to the delights of the local gastronomy (ewe's milk cheeses, peppers, foie gras and duck confits among others...), what would you say to a donkey ride, a mountain bike session, or a restful interlude (or not !) at the sea ? The beaches of Biarritz and Bidart will be perfect for your farniente sessions under the sun, as well as for the practice of nautical activities according to your desires. Surfing, paddle, canoeing, swimming, kayaking, sailing, scuba diving and other water sports will undoubtedly make your stay in the Basque Country even more enjoyable!
