Ideally located on the border with Spain, the city of Céret and the perfect place for a quiet holiday. Far from the hustle and bustle of big tourist cities, Céret offers anyone who wants to take the time to discover it a dream setting for stays in harmony with nature.
At the foot of the Albères massif, against the backdrop of the Pic du Canigou, Céret, a welcoming Catalan city, invites you to come and contemplate its many faces. A perfect combination of modernity and tradition, Céret can be visited along its long boulevards dotted with century-old plane trees. The first stopover for a historical visit of the city is the Gate of Spain. The current vestige of what was once one of the gates of the medieval ramparts, it houses in its tower (Place Pablo Picasso) an archaeological museum, the "Maison du Patrimoine Françoise Claustre": dating from prehistory to the Middle Ages, its precious collections are the result of excavations carried out in Céret and Vallespir. Another essential visit is the Museum of Modern Art in Céret: located on boulevard du Maréchal Joffre, it will allow you to discover in no time the artistic history of the town which, for years, has attracted famous artists such as Chagall, Soutine, Picasso, Braque, Dufy or Matisse, who have walked the cobblestones of Céret and its region in search of inspiration.
In the heart of the Tech Valley, Céret is watered by the river of the same name, which defines its contours to the north of the city. In spring in particular, it is pleasant to stroll along the flowered orchards that dominate the city; with a few cherries in hand, take the time to stroll along the many signposted circuits that run through Céret and its surroundings. The Château d'Aubiry, the Pont du Diable which crosses the river Tech, the Hermitage of Saint Ferréol, but also the Gorges de la Fou, the Massif des Albères or the Pic du Canigou are perfect sites for family and sports walks. Looking for a little freshness? Lake Riutec takes place to the east of the commune, followed in its wake by the lakes of Saint-Jean Pla de Corts. The latter are very popular in summer for diving in front of the Canigou, and fans of sliding sports will enjoy a wide choice of water activities, from water skiing to wakeboarding, monoskiing, kneeboarding, wakeskate, surfing, sailing, paddle, pedal boats, motor boats, inflatable games, trampolines, or adventure courses. Moreover, thanks to its privileged geographical location between the sea and the mountains, Céret has what it takes to delight the whole family, and even the most demanding of sensations. Overflying the town by paragliding, bungee jumping from the Devil's Bridge, mountain biking and canyoning in the Gourg des Annelles await aficionados of adrenaline! Lovers of idleness under the sun will only have to take the direction of the beaches of Argelès-sur-Mer (30 kilometres), Collioure or Banyuls-sur-Mer for a few dives into the sea.
Finally, marked by the influence of neighbouring Spain, Céret is also a city of traditions, animated and punctuated by many events throughout the year: carnivals (the famous "corsos"), but also concerts, férias (July), bullfights, sardana competitions (local dance, which even has its own "Sardana Festival" in July) or Cherry Festival (in May)...
