About thirty minutes from Draguignan, Salernes is located in the heart of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, at an altitude of 220 metres in the Bresque valley. Nestled at the foot of the ruins of an imposing medieval castle at the confluence of the Grave and Pelicourt rivers, Salernes is a craft town, nicknamed the "Capital of Ceramics", renowned for its red hexagonal tomatoes and terracotta pottery, skills that are very old and emblematic of the region. The Terra Rossa House of Architectural Ceramics is worth a visit: retracing the history of ceramics in the region over the centuries, this immense museum will take you back to the heart of the centuries-old local tradition of terracotta tiles, used to decorate houses all over the world.

Historical, the municipality has several significant remains such as the megalithic tomb of the Lauve, to the north of the village. You will also find the ruins of its former feudal castle, of which only two towers still remain today. If the site is worth a visit for its historical side, it is also famous for the magnificent panoramas it offers over the village and the surrounding valleys. As you stroll through Salernes, you will cross paths with the Chapelle Saint-Jacques, the 13th century Romanesque church of Saint-Pierre, but also the Pont Roman de la Muie, a washhouse and a Roman bridge, on the road towards the neighbouring village of Entrecasteaux.

Hiking enthusiasts looking for beautiful views? Direction the site of Saint-Barthélemy, in the north of the commune: from there, in the valley of La Brague dug by the waters of ancient torrents, you can discover the chapels, the rivers and the ancestral caves that dot the area of Salernes, covered with Aleppo pines and an odorous flora. The caves of Villecroze are also worth seeing: located in the neighbouring eponymous city, these cave dwellings formed 700,000 years ago at the end of the first Ice Age are of amazing beauty, transformed over the centuries into underground fortresses. The Var is famous for its (oh how many) numerous hiking routes: in all, there are more than 3000 kilometres of marked hiking trails and nearly 100 kilometres of cycling routes for all levels that will allow you to explore landscapes of great diversity, both inland and by the sea.

During the summer, you can swim in Salernes' natural swimming pool, la Muie, fed by the waters of the Bresque: under the Romanesque bridge, the clear waters of the river form a natural pool coiled in a magnificent setting, which attracts many curious people every year. If you prefer sea swimming, the beaches of Fréjus, Saint-Raphaël and Sainte-Maxime are only an hour's drive away: you can choose to sunbathe on your towel, swim, or let yourself be tempted by some water activities such as jet-skiing, surfing, paddle, sailing, sea outings, water skiing, kayaking or windsurfing, as you wish.
