Capital of the Comtat Venaissin, Carpentras, a former fortified place, is one of those cultural destinations to be seen at least once in a lifetime. Ah, Carpentras: City of Art and History nestled at the crossroads of the Rhone and Durance rivers, it takes place in the heart of green countryside, well sheltered from the mistral wind that blows over the region. Marked by its rich past, Carpentras has a colossal heritage, which it inherited from the passage of the popes on its lands for five centuries. Its unique architecture, with the soft airs of Tuscan cities, is largely inspired by the warm and elegant Italian architecture, and its culture is marked by the presence of a large Jewish community, which arrived in Carpentras as early as Roman times. The city is also home to the oldest Synagogue in France, erected in 1367: still in operation, it is one of the inseparable sites in the history of Carpentras. You will have thus understood it, during your stay, it is a whole pleiad of places and monuments all more beautiful the ones than the others that you will have to visit. This southern Gothic-style building was commissioned by Pope Benedict XIII in 1404, and it was much later, in the 17th century, that it was adorned with its magnificent Italian facade. If it is worth the detour for its surprising exterior, its interior decorations and its treasures (including its 42-metre high nave and the Saint-Mors forged in the 4th century for the horse of the Emperor Constantine) make it a must see when you visit Carpentras.
