Renowned for its gypsum quarries, the largest open-air gypsum quarries in Europe, the small town of Mazan conceals many treasures and secrets. Rich in a splendid heritage, this neighbour of Carpentras located in the heart of Provence, about thirty minutes from Avignon, Orange and Cavaillon, has enough to win the hearts of visitors in search of preserved landscapes and authenticity.

Ah, how beautiful Provence is! And how beautiful is the quiet little town of Mazan. Village of Comtat Venaissin, in the heart of the Vaucluse, Mazan is surrounded by the elegant slopes of the North Vaucluse mountains and the legendary Mont-Ventoux. Watered by the tranquil meanders of the river Auzon, this village with its Mediterranean climate was once a fortified town in the Middle Ages. Built on a small hill, its historic centre surrounded by ramparts is worth the detour for the beauty of its old stones that line the course of the Auzon. Strolling along its beautifully preserved ramparts, you can discover the 8 monumental gates that pierce the fortifications, allowing you to pass on either side of the city. The Porte de Mormoiron, which once had a drawbridge, is worth seeing, as is the Château des Astaud-Causans, whose façade is integrated into the ramparts. But as far as architectural heritage is concerned, your visit does not stop there since Mazan is home to many splendid sites such as the 18th century Château de Sade, the magnificent 17th century Hôtel de Valette located in the Gran'rue, the Chapel of the White Penitents, the Chapel of Notre-Dame la Brune, or the Chapel of Notre-Dame de Pareloup. Mazan also houses Merovingian tombs, as well as Gallo-Roman sarcophagi dating from the 5th and 6th centuries. Decorated with sculptures, these limestone tombs are the first witnesses of the Christian religion in the village of Mazan.

On the walking side, the commune has magnificent hiking trails, suitable for Sunday walkers as well as for trekking enthusiasts, horse riding aficionados and pedal enthusiasts. The "Sentier de la pierre sèche", but also those that wind through the garrigues, the vineyards, the valleys planted with Provençal species, via the green banks of the Auzon and on the first foothills of the Mont-Ventoux are particularly recommended, so as not to miss anything of this little corner of tranquillity. By bike or on foot, it is easy to reach Carpentras, 6 kilometres away, or Avignon, 20 kilometres away.

Finally, Mazan is a generous land, whose flavours will delight the taste buds of adults and children alike. Muscat du Ventoux, AOC Ventoux wines, but also asparagus, cherries, melons, apricots, strawberries and green beans from local production, candied fruit, one-eyed bouillabaisse, cachaille, bohemian (vegetable speciality), pompe à l'huile, crespeou, pastis, aïoli, white nougat and Provencal caillette will delight the whole family.
