Hanging at the foot of the north face of Mont Ventoux, of which it is the main gateway, Malaucène is one of those small villages of character for which the coup de coeur is immediate. Typical village of Provence, Malaucène is distinguished by the beauty of its landscapes, but also thanks to its rich heritage and architecture.
Perched 350 metres above sea level in one of the most beautiful natural sites in France, Malaucène is only 9 kilometres from Vaison-la-Romaine, 18 kilometres from Carpentras and 50 kilometres from Avignon. In the heart of the Vaucluse, not far from the southern Drôme, this typical village of Provence sows the invitations to come and discover its many treasures, for a real breath of fresh air in this little corner of paradise. But Malaucène is first and foremost a rich built heritage. During your strolls in the shade of its hundred-year-old plane trees, to the rhythm of its ancient streets dotted with wash houses and fountains, you will certainly have the opportunity to pass in front of the chapel Notre-Dame du Groseau: built in the middle of an exceptional quiet environment right next to a spring bearing its name, it is one of the major monuments of Malaucène. Listed as a Historic Monument in 1853, it is truly worth a visit. The second building not to be missed during your visit is the Saint-Michel church. Built by order of Pope Clement V during the 13th century, this building of character is the pride of the inhabitants of Malaucène. With its round paths, its machicolations, its fortifications and its 18th century organ, it is one of the highlights of your visit. Guided visits are organized throughout the year to allow you to discover the smallest secrets of Malaucène, from its Picardy Fountain to the passage of the Donkey, passing by the Belfry, the fortified gates and the ancient ramparts of the city. Bordered by cafés, restaurants, plane trees and terraces, the Cours des Isnards is the place where you will have to be every Wednesday morning : this is where the superb Malaucène market has been held for over seven centuries. A true institution, it is a formidable showcase for local producers and craftsmen who sell their fresh products, from cherries ("burlats" or "pigeon heart") to apricots, without forgetting asparagus, strawberries (delicious!), grapes, cheeses made from goat's milk grown on the slopes of Mont Ventoux, but also delicious grape varieties from local cellars such as Côtes du Rhône and Côtes du Ventoux.
Considered by some as the kingdom of cycling, Malaucène is the starting point of the famous ascent of Mont Ventoux, famous for its 22 kilometres of ascent with 1600 metres of altitude difference. Although this ascent is rather reserved for experienced cyclists, you can still enjoy a good number of cycling routes for VTC and VTT through Malaucène, the Vaucluse and the Mont Ventoux region. In addition to cycling, winter and summer, Malaucène is the ideal place for athletes to pack their bags. Thanks to its proximity to the Mont Serein resort, you can enjoy a wide range of activities. During the summer, hiking, cycling, trail riding, paragliding, but also forest walks, pony rides, horse riding and inflatable games are sure to please young and old alike. During the winter, you will have to bring your skis to ski down its snowy slopes ! On the agenda ? Alpine skiing of course, but also sledging, cross-country skiing, ski touring and snowshoeing will allow the whole family to enjoy the joys of the mountain. From Malaucène, you will also find several long-distance hiking routes such as the GR4, starting just next to the source of Groseau (7-hour route), as well as the GR91 linking Malaucène to Brantes through the Toulourenc valley and the northern slopes of Mont Ventoux (8-hour route). Other walks are also possible for all levels, such as the "Between vineyards and hills" itinerary : combining the pleasure of the eyes and the pleasure of the taste buds, this signposted walk will allow you to discover the richness of the local soil as well as many unusual panoramas on the surroundings of Malaucène, such as the aqueduct and its 19th century ox's eye, and the many balconies and terraces which will offer you breathtaking panoramas. Finally, do not miss the magnificent stroll punctuated by 13 oratories that will take you to the panoramic site of Calvary : from this site where once stood an ancient castle of the eighteenth century, proudly throne three crosses. From this peaceful green place, perfect for a relaxing break, the view is exceptional on the red tiles of the village and the Mont Ventoux.
