The commune of Saignon is 35 kilometres from Cavaillon, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. A land of hiking, gourmet and welcoming, Saignon will delight lovers of old stones, as well as sportsmen and epicureans in search of authenticity.

A small belvedere village perched high above the Calavon valley, on the foothills of the Luberon, Saignon offers its lucky visitors incredible panoramas of the Apt valley and the Vaucluse mountains. To contemplate with your eyes this extraordinary sight on the green valleys of the region, you will need to bring good shoes and make your calves work because here, it climbs, it climbs... Small medieval village, ancient stronghold thanks to its Celto-Ligurian oppidum, Saignon sees its origins dating back to the end of the 10th century; here, it is an exceptional heritage that history has left on the path of travellers passing through the region. Saignon marvels with its winding, cobbled streets, its narrow lanes with houses lined with Virginia creepers, decorated with flowered windows with pastel shutters, and its houses covered with paintings in shades of ochre and old stones, typical of the area. These limestone stones emblematic of the local landscape, you will also come across many of them as you stroll through its countryside dotted with restanques, stone walls that were used to hold back the earth.

An open-air museum, Saignon is home to many splendid sites and monuments to be discovered. The ruins of its ancient castle are worth a visit, as are its Clock Tower and its Romanesque church, a well-known place of pilgrimage throughout Provence in the Middle Ages. And how not to fall under its charm, since from the entrance, its imposing open door, unique of its kind, is a true work of art. Inside, all the splendour of its Italian marble columns will be displayed before your eyes, marble which, according to history, came from a Roman temple. Its ancient ramparts, its former 11th century Saint-Eusèbe abbey built on the remains of a former lordly palace from the 6th century, the old washhouses, its caves, but also the 11th century Saint-Michel de Transi chapel, the fortified castle of Valcroissant (10th century), the Saint-Donat chapel, the old medieval houses and the old fountains make Saignon a town with an absolutely magnificent heritage, which young and old alike will love to discover.

To the sound of birds singing and bakers enjoying their favourite activity, continue your discovery of Saigon by taking its various footpaths. Very appreciated by hikers, the commune is a true concentrate of nature, offering walks through vineyards and fragrant lavender, with the key to the absolutely sumptuous Provencal landscapes where the rock of the mountain merges with its red tile roofs, characteristic of this pretty corner of the Vaucluse. Whether you're on foot or on mountain bike, you'll find a whole host of signposted itineraries that will allow you to contemplate the village from every angle. We also recommend that you climb to the top of the "Rocher de Bellevue": here is one that definitely lives up to its name!
