Spreading over 17 hectares, Park Guell is a high place in Barcelona. Classified as a UNESCO heritage site in 1984, and born of Gaudi's spirit, its structure combines nature and architecture. The houses seem to come straight out of a fairy tale and the mosaics that adorn certain buildings (such as the serpentine bench, the very famous salamander or the ceiling of the Hall with its hundred columns) blend harmoniously with the flora. The most beautiful example is a carob tree (native to the Mediterranean regions) whose trunk is artistically intertwined with a column.

The origin of the Guell Park dates back to 1900 when Eusebi Guell, a cultured and colourful character, used Gaudi to build a residential district of Catalan and Christian inspiration, close to the Carmel hill and comprising at the same time : chapel, gardens and small houses (60 in number). When this entrepreneur died in 1918, the park was taken over by the Ayuntamiento de Barcelona and became public. Guell Park also has pavilions, squares, staircases, halls, viaducts and fountains. These constructions are dreamlike and metaphorical, in the image of Gaudi : the dragon is very often represented, the benches are often undulated, the Hall of the Hundred Columns is decorated with mosaics representing mythological or religious figures and the chimney of the house of the guards is in the shape of mushroom.

The legendary salamander, decorated with ceramics and mirrors, testifies to the technique of TRENCADIS (artistic technique of Catalan modernism, predominant in Gaudi's creations) is both the symbol of fire and faith, but above all one of the symbols of the city of Barcelona.

The Hall of the Hundred Columns called "the Hypostyle Hall" is actually composed of 86 columns. Its role is to support the Place de la Nature and was to be the place of the covered market. The construction of the vaults has been designed in such a way that rainwater does not stagnate in the square above and is collected to fill the fountains and water the various gardens. You will admire on the ceilings magnificent mosaics representing the sun, the moon and many other stars. These works are not by Gaudi but by his friend and collaborator Josep Maria Jujol i Gibert, who had a real sensitivity for nature (and therefore for creative recycling). This space offers a perfect acoustics, you can perhaps attend an improvised concert of hang or violin. At the end of the square of nature is the famous mosaic bench, a real "artistic snake", 150 metres long. The old and the new meet : the esplanade recalls ancient theatres while the bench and its many pieces of glass or earthenware projects visitors into a chimerical and wonderful world.

The house-museum of Gaudí was at the base the pilot house which served as a model for the potential inhabitants of this allotment. It was built by one of Gaudí's collaborators. There is an important collection of works on three floors : prototypes, notes and sketches of future projects. Gaudi lived there until 1925, when he moved to the Temple workshop, at the heart of his titanic work : La Sagrada Familia. To conclude your visit of the Park Guell : climb to the top of the hill on which should have been built the chapel of the allotment. A small building inspired by the talayots, prehistoric constructions originating from the Balearic Islands, was built there. The stones which constitute it have the particularity of not being connected between them by any cement or other consolidators. Three crosses rise majestically, symbolizing Jesus' torment. Let yourself be intoxicated by the calm and the singing breeze of this place having for horizon, the beautiful Barcelona and the sea.
