Dominating the Nauze valley from its rocky spur, Belvès, now known as "Pays de Belvès", takes place in the heart of the Périgord Noir, in the Dordogne. A cultural, historical and natural destination, this green resort offers its visitors a perfect setting for a sporty and gourmet holiday.
Belvès, an 11th century medieval city renowned for its 7 high bell towers, is one of the "Most Beautiful Villages in France". Although frequently besieged throughout history, this charming town has managed to preserve many vestiges of its past: ramparts, towers and bell towers of the time, church, medieval residences and splendid private mansions dot the narrow streets steeped in the history of Belvès. As if frozen in time, Belvès will allow you an incredible leap in history! Take the time to visit the city on foot: you can't miss the covered market, certainly one of the most beautiful sites in the town. Built between the 15th and 16th centuries, it is composed of 23 wooden pillars, one of which was used as a pillory until the Revolution. Continue your visit of Belvès by heading towards its castle, located three minutes walk from the halls: listed as a Historic Monument since 1948, this pink stone building is also called "Hôtel de Commarque". With its magnificent wall paintings, richly decorated rooms and large room, it is definitely worth a visit. In addition, its gardens offer incomparable views of the splendours of the Nauze Valley, not to be missed. Then walk to the convent of the Friars Preachers (11th century), to finally find the heart of the medieval city. On the Place d'Armes, under the hall, there is a historical site that is the pride of the Belvésois: the troglodytic dwellings. Occupied until the 18th century, these 8 underground residences can be visited and attract many troglos lovers every year.
The Bessède forest at the gates of Belvès has a myriad of hiking trails and signposted paths, allowing mountain bikers, riders and walkers to discover all the riches of the Belvesois landscapes. The golf de la Forge, located 9 kilometres further north, will delight greens lovers with its 9 holes, while the "canoe-raid" nautical base will allow you to discover the most beautiful villages of the Dordogne on the calm waters of the Vazère and the Dordogne. Not far away, the Château des Milandes, the Château de Castelnaud-la-Chapelle, the Maxange caves as well as the Château de Marqueyssac and its fantastic gardens are also worth a visit.
Finally, how can we talk about Belvès without mentioning its cuisine? A gourmet land, the Périgord noir is renowned for its essential delicacies. On the menu? Foie gras, truffles, Bergerac wines, honeys, nuts, ceps, local beers, sturgeons, chestnuts, cheeses (such as cabécou), jams and delicious jams make the region one of the jewels of French cuisine.
