10 kilometers from Sarlat-la-Canéda, in the heart of the Périgord, Beynac-et-Cazenac is one of those postcard villages where you can feel at home in an instant. On the northern banks of the Dordogne, which meanders around the village to the south, Beynac-et-Cazenac reveals a charming heritage that attracts many visitors every year. Beynac-et-Cazenac is listed as one of the "Most Beautiful Villages in France" thanks to its exceptional panoramic views. It can be visited on foot or by bicycle, but also by canoe, gabare and even by hot air balloon for thrill seekers. The heart of the village reveals an old medieval soul with an atypical cachet: the blonde stone houses are topped with slate roofs, the stone streets invite you to get lost along the cobblestones that tell the story of this ancient city. Beynac-et-Cazenac tells its visitors about more than 5 centuries of history, from Richard the Lionheart to Eleanor of Aquitaine through the Hundred Years War. Overlooking the village, its emblematic castle sits on its vertiginous cliff, watching over the streets below like a lighthouse keeper in the night. Mentioned as the most authentic fortified castle in the whole of the Périgord, it has dominated the village for more than 9 centuries and reveals to its lucky visitors crazy panoramas on the valleys which surround it. Besieged by Richard the Lionheart, this ancient stronghold has been used for the shooting of many films (such as Les Visiteurs II, Jeanne d'Arc by Luc Besson...) and reveals today magnificent sceneries, a keep built in the XIIth century, an absolutely fabulous Renaissance staircase and terraces that invite to contemplation. Around the fortress, you can still discover its enclosure pierced by large fortified doors, and take the time to visit its most beautiful districts! The barri de la Cafourque, the barri del Soucy (weavers' quarter), or the barri del Port, an old trading port. During your walks, you will discover the dry-stone hut of Persillier, but also the church of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption, the Tour de Chevalier, the ruins of the old Abrillac convent, and many others!
