In the heart of the Périgord Noir, a historic nugget is blooming overlooking the Dordogne. Castelnaud-la-Chapelle, that's its name, is a village that fascinates as much as it fascinates thanks to the magnificence of its heritage, both built and natural. Ready for a holiday full of discoveries?

About fifteen kilometres south-west of Sarlat-la-Canéda, in the Dordogne department, Castelnaud-la-Chapelle spreads out around its rocky spur, between 51 and 283 metres above sea level. A prestigious destination, nicknamed the "Sentinel of the Dordogne" because of its unique location, it faces its neighbours of La Roque-Gageac and Beynac-et-Ceyzenac by revealing to its visitors its terraced lanes dotted with typical Perigordian dwellings and opulent residences. Classified in the very select list of the "Most Beautiful Villages of France", Castelnaud-la-Chapelle enchants by the great variety of its monuments. From squares to steep streets, you will discover the dovecotes, castles, cliffs and rivers below which make this place seem like a magical place where time seems suspended. Here there are many churches that you will discover as you take the time to explore the city. Lacoste's neo-gothic-style castle chapel, but also the church of Saint-Jacques-le-Mineur des Milandes, the church of Saint-Eutrope, the churches of Saint Blaise, Saint-Michel-Archange and the modern church will be worth seeing during your stay.

However, one site holds all the attention of the visitors: the Castle of Castelnaud-la-Chapelle. Built overlooking the Dordogne, at the very top of the village, it sees everything and can be seen from absolutely everywhere in the village. Founded in the 12th century, it was an English camp during the Hundred Years' War, then a medieval fortress in charge of defending part of the Périgord. Rather well preserved, it now houses the "Museum of War in the Middle Ages", which is worth a visit both for the richness of its collections and for the breathtaking views it offers over the surrounding valleys. Another visit not to be missed? That of the Château des Milandes. Former property of Josephine Baker in the 20th century, this opulent building, known for the splendour of its gardens and architecture, was built in 1489. A Renaissance castle, it enjoys an incomparable view of the Dordogne and its valley, and offers its visitors beautiful discoveries. Renaissance fireplaces, Art-Deco bathrooms, gargoyles, slate roofs, mullioned windows, Gothic staircases, English park, stained glass windows and wood panelling can be discovered throughout the year, during visits or bird of prey shows during the summer. Finally, the Château de Fayrac will complete the inventory of the castles in Castelnaud-la-Chapelle. A 15th century building, recognizable by its round tower, drawbridge, machicolated curtain wall and chapel, it impresses by the elegance of its architecture. A former defensive outpost, it cannot be visited but can be admired from the paths laid out along the river. Visits to the Gro-Bique cave, the Ecomusée de la Noix, bike rides towards Sarlat, the capital of the Périgord Noir, gourmet tastings (Bergerac wines, jams, chestnuts, honey, ceps, cheeses, black truffle, cabécou, walnuts, foie gras...) and swimming in the Dordogne will finally complete your stay in Castelnaud-la-Chapelle!
