On the border of the Lot, Besse is a small village in the Dordogne region with all its charm. Quiet and exotic, a few steps from the prehistoric sites of the Vézère Valley and the castles of the Dordogne Valley, it has everything you need to satisfy holidaymakers looking for a stay in the countryside.

Established in the heart of the Périgord Noir, Besse is part of the Pays du Châtaignier. Made of beautiful ochre stone houses with which contrast large beds of roses, Besse is a village for which it is easy to fall in love at first sight. Its Romanesque church is its main historical site: also made of skilfully carved yellow stones, it is distinguished by the beauty of its elaborate portal and its slate roof. If there is another treasure of which Besse is proud, it is certainly his castle: classified as a Historic Monument, this 16th century building has all the traditional local buildings of the time. Dominating the village and its surrounding valleys, this massive castle impresses with its beautiful courtyard, square towers, old cobblestones and ramparts. Unfortunately, you will not be able to visit it (the domain is private), but you will still be able to observe it during your excursions.

Besse is a radiant place to rest, but also to escape thanks to its preserved environment. On foot or by bike, it will be easy for you to discover the smallest secrets. If there is one itinerary that we particularly recommend, it is the one of the "Sentiers de la Châtaigne". Travelling through 9 communes, from Besse to Campagnac-lès-Quercy via Prats-du-Périgord, Mazeyrolles, Loubéjac, Lavaur, Villefranche-du-Périgord or Saint-Cernin de l'Herme, this itinerary will allow you to discover all the most beautiful landscapes of the Pays du Châtaignier. The bastide of Villefranche-du-Périgord, classified as a green holiday resort, is a neighbouring commune of Besse. It is particularly worth a visit for its beautiful medieval architecture and soothing setting, as well as for its famous cep market held from September to mid-November.

But what also makes Besse special is that it is particularly well located to be able to discover the riches of history with a "great H". To the north of the village are some of the major sites of parietal history: the Cave of Bara Bahau (Le Bugue, 39 kilometres away), the Caves of Maxange (Le-Buisson-de-Cadouin, 31 kilometres away), Padirac and its famous Chasm (80 kilometres), the Troglodytic houses of Belvès (19 kilometres), the Grotte de Lascaux II (Montignac, 62 kilometres away), but also the Grotte de Domme (25 kilometres away), or the Grotte du Pech Merle (Cabrerets, 61 kilometres away) are some of the sites not to be missed during your stay in Besse. More castle fans? The Périgord Noir is full of splendid buildings to discover. The Château des Milandes and Castelnaud-la-Chapelle (22 kilometres away), Belvès, Lanquais (53 kilometres), Château and Gardens of Losse in Thonac (60 kilometres), Château de Fénelon (Sainte-Mondane, 37 kilometres), the panoramic gardens of Limeul (36 kilometres) and those of Carsac-Aillac (34 kilometres) will be perfect sites for family or couple walks, for cultural and romantic parentheses.

Finally, in terms of activities, in addition to the hundreds of kilometres of hiking that the Périgord Noir abounds in, Besse will lend itself to a good number of sports: mountain biking, canoeing, kayaking, ballooning, quad biking, horseback riding, swimming in the Bos ponds... Something to satisfy everyone!
