A grandiose spectacle: this is what awaits you when you arrive in Arlempdes. Classified as one of the "Most Beautiful Villages in France", Arlempdes puts the emphasis on history, with a "big H". Located in the Haute-Loire department, about thirty kilometers south of Le Puy-en-Velay, the medieval village of Arlempdes unfolds along its old streets of houses with typical charm of the region, made of stone, which give the town a crazy cachet. Perched on a vast volcanic outcrop that is embraced by one of the meanders of the Loire, this jewel of the Loire gorges is surrounded by impressive basalt flows. Our advice? Climb up to the heights of Arlempdes via a small path, to contemplate a breathtaking panorama of the village below, but also the wild valleys nearby and the Loire. You will also discover the ruins of a castle built in the Middle Ages by the lords of Montclaur, the very first castle to have been built on the course of the Loire. Its defensive wall, its circular tower, its machicolations and part of its former main building can still be seen in the heart of the debris. But the star of this castle is its chapel: built on the edge of the rock, facing the precipice, this castral chapel watches over the course of the Loire like a watchtower. Built in red volcanic tuff, it is certainly one of the most photographed sites of Arlempdes, and offers from its privileged position a breathtaking panorama. Below this ancient defensive fortress, a whole bunch of buildings from the same period are to be seen: the 11th century village entrance postern (which belonged to the castle's outer enclosure), the houses with narrow mullioned windows, but also the Saint-Pierre church. The latter, a Romanesque building from the 12th century, is astonishing for the beauty of its architecture and its bell tower with four arches, typical of the Languedoc region.

After having taken the pulse of Arlempdes by strolling through its alleys full of history, what would you say to a refreshing break on the banks of the Loire? With its small pebble beaches, the Loire is a favourite with onlookers looking for a break on the river, which is appreciated during the hot summer months. You can take a dip in the river, but you can also opt for walks along its banks, thanks to a vast network of signposted footpaths that cross the village of Arlempdes. A visit to the Montagnac caves to the north of the village, a canoe trip on the Loire, a hike to the volcanic lake of Bouchet nestled in a green setting, an accrobranche day at the "Rondin Parc", a mountain bike ride in the direction of Le Puy-en-Velay or the neighbouring Ardèche, or an outing to the Beaufort castle will complete this stay in the heart of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region!
