Between espadrilles and old stones, breathtaking panoramas and marked gastronomy, this small town of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques has what it takes to seduce many visitors. So let's go!

Considered as the capital of espadrille, Mauléon-Licharre is a real nugget. Surrounded by hills, the capital of Soule, the smallest province of the Basque Country, has its origins in medieval times. Perched at 139 meters high, this town of less than 3000 inhabitants was for a long time attached to the English crown, until the middle of the 16th century, before experiencing a great economic boom during the 19th century, thanks to the manufacture of espadrille, of which the town still ensures the major part of the production in France! An ancient bastide developed at the foot of its hill, it is surmounted by a 12th century fortified castle, which is open to visitors: with its large towers and its thick enclosure, this squat and imposing castle is a must-see during any stay in Mauléon-Licharre, and in particular during the summer period, it hosts shows which we recommend you attend. Moreover, the view on the city and its neighboring valleys is incomparable! Also take the time to visit the lower town, full of sites not to be missed. What to see? The Castle of Maÿtie, known as Andurain (end of the 16th century), recognizable by its Renaissance style with elaborate dormers and mullioned windows! The Town Hall on the Place des Allées, the Maison de la Fée at 8 rue du Fort (the oldest residence in Mauléon), but also the Maison de Bela (also known as the Manoir de Bela), the 1765 market hall, without forgetting the chapel of Saint-Jean-de-Berrauté and the church of Notre-Dame de la Haute-Ville will complete the inventory of visits to be made during this stay.
