In the heart of the Vendée, Angles benefits from the mild ocean climate due to its proximity to the Atlantic coast. In the lake of its alleys, the village also declines a true sweetness of life and invites you to share a rich natural, architectural and gastronomic heritage.
Founded at the end of the 11th century, Angles has the charm of these old villages that have passed through history. Walking in its quiet and authentic streets, you will appreciate its houses and low stone walls that give it a Provencal touch. In the centre of the village, you can admire one of the most beautiful religious monuments in Vendée : the Sainte Marie des Angles church. This church is distinguished by its mixture of Romanesque and Gothic styles and, above all, by its bear statue which caps the gable of the façade. Legend has it that this beast terrorized the inhabitants of the village before a holy man captured it and petrified it at its present location.
Near the village, many other monuments are worth a visit. This is particularly the case with the Moricq tower. Built on the ruins of a fortified castle, this tower was used as a keep by an ancient fortress to defend the mouth of the Lay from possible invaders. Transformed into a prison then a granary, it is now open free of charge to the public during the summer period. But also take the time to visit the Octroi, a small stone pavilion built above the canal des Bourrasses. Built at the end of the 18th or beginning of the 19th century, it served as a customs barrier where merchants had to pay a tax, the "octroi", for all goods crossing it.
Take advantage of your stay in Angles to discover the magic of the Poitevin marsh. On foot, by bike, on horseback or by boat, the second wetland in France, after the Camargue, offers you an exceptional natural environment, between canals, calcareous islets, and so particular fauna and flora. Then go to the coast to relax on the long beaches of fine sand or to indulge in your favourite nautical activity : sailing, surfing, paddle, bodyboard... And after a busy day, let yourself be tempted by the tasty local specialties : seafood, mogettes, prefou and the famous brioche vendéenne declined as a waste or as a fouasse.
