In the heart of the protected area of Las Cumbres, Vega de San Mateo, also known as "San Mateo", is located 22 kilometres from the capital Las Palmas. Rich in an important agricultural tradition, the village is well known for its market which attracts visitors and regulars from all over the island every weekend. A typical island market, it includes a flea market, a flower market and stalls full of regional products: its fresh fruit and vegetables, wines, pastries, honeys, aromatic herbs, local crafts, but also its coffees and friendly atmosphere make it a must during your stay. As for gastronomy, the village has several restaurants where you can learn about the delights of local flavours. On the menu? Grilled chorizo, watercress stew, marinated pork dishes, gofio, stews, vegetable soups, San Mateo fresh cheese, or "bienmesabe", "frangollo" (a cake made from prunes) and other "leche frita" (a flan) will satisfy the gourmands.

From Roque Bicaral, located in the Bodeguilla district, awaits you with an impressive view of the entire village and region. A little further on, the Natural Mirador de la Cruz y Montanon is certainly one of the most impressive in the area: located on the heights of San Mateo, it will allow you to enjoy a 360° view of the entire city below. The Gorges de La Mine Route along Las Lagunetas, the Barranco de la Mina and Biliandra mountain paths, the Panorama of Montana Cabreja, the valleys around the Curva Grande or the paths leading to the summit of the Pic de Las Nieves (1949 metres above sea level) will delight beginners and experienced walkers alike, allowing you to discover the smallest secrets of Vega de San Mateo and its surroundings.

Finally, Vega de San Mateo will dazzle young and old alike: well known to astronomy fans, the town is the perfect place to study the stars. At the Roque Saucillo astronomical centre, many events and observation workshops are organised throughout the year. The most adventurous will head to the highest peaks of the village to contemplate and even, if you are a photography lover, try to immortalize the stars and the Milky Way.
